Professor Mark Motte, PhD

Mark Motte is Professor and Director of Geography at Rhode Island College.  He teaches, researches and writes about urban planning and policy, and has published several articles, book reviews and, with his colleague Francis Leazes, Jr., authored Providence, The Renaissance City (Northeastern University Press, 2004).  Motte has served in a number of administrative capacities at the college as well as consulted widely to nonprofit organizations, architecture/planning/design firms and private industry.  His current research interests are 21st Century downtown redevelopment policies in the U.S. and Europe, and the role of community-based nonprofit organizations in the cultural and economic revitalization of low-income neighborhoods.  Motte lives with his wife and son in the historic Edgewood section of Cranston, Rhode Island and serves on that city’s Planning Commission.
